Matthew Colvin

Matthew Colvin is one of Hamilton’s talented young musicians, having played the clarinet since he was nine years old.  He has been fully immersed in the Orchestras Central family, first as a principal clarinet for Youth Orchestra Waikato (YOW) and then after being inspired by the Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra’s Sunset Symphony performance in 2023, as a regular there too.  Being part of the Orchestras Central family sparked his love for orchestral performance.

His experience in YOW and TWSO gave Matthew the confidence to audition for NZ Secondary Schools’ Symphony Orchestra (NZSSSO) and NZ Youth Symphonic Winds.  In 2025, he served as Principal Clarinet of both the New Zealand Youth Symphonic Winds and the NZSSSO, previously performing on clarinet and bass clarinet with the NZSSSO in 2024. Chamber music is a real passion for Matthew.  He has achieved success in regional competitions and has broadened his experiences through the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Summer School, and the NZSO Emerging Artist Programme.  He has also had the opportunity to musically direct for Hamilton Boys’/Girls’ High School.

Orchestras Central has given Matthew the opportunity to work alongside many different musicians, from professionals to peers his own age, playing a huge role in his growth as a musician. These opportunities have not just honed his technical skills, but also given him confidence and resilience that shape the way he approaches music as a whole.

Matthew is a perfect example of how your support can enable a young musician to develop to their potential more fully through the orchestral opportunities we provide as part of our orchestral ecosystem.

Every donation will help to support our unshakeable belief in the transformative potential of orchestras.

Gift in Wills

Another way is to provide a gift in your Will. If legacy giving is meaningful for you after you have considered your Whānau and loved ones, please do let us know. If you wish, we could then acknowledge your future generosity in our concert programmes.

A gift of any size can make a measurable difference to what we are able to do. You could make a gift of a certain sum, or a specific asset – for example a musical instrument that could be used by a member of the youth orchestra. Or a specific percentage of your estate or a gift after provision has been made for your Whānau and loved ones.

If you would like to support Orchestras Central Trust in this way, please do speak with your lawyer. They would need to know our full name and registered charity number as below.
