New Zealand is planning and responding to the COVID-19 Coronavirus, as the particular strain is called.
As this happens, I thought I would let you know that we too are planning and preparing. We are developing a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and are continuously monitoring the World Health Organisation and the Ministry of Health communications and updates.
In New Zealand we have had 28 confirmed cases so far, including two in the Waikato, however, none of them are our staff or players. Strict controls are also now in place regarding mass gatherings.
As a result, we are taking a conservative approach to our planning over the next few months, and have stopped orchestral activity for all of our orchestras – Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra, Rusty Players, Youth Orchestra and our professional ensemble – effective immediately.
This means that the Youth Orchestra camp, ‘YOW Beating Beethoven’, Rusty Roadtrip and TWSO Mothers Day Concert will not go ahead as planned. Where possible we hope to reschedule these concerts. Events further out on our calendar will be kept under watching brief. We are also thinking about how we might present music in other ways – and we look forward to sharing our ideas with you.
We will, of course, continue to monitor and take advice from the Ministry of Health, along with other information being provided to us by stakeholders like Creative NZ. We know how much everyone looks forward to our concerts and events, and share your concern and disappointment about the inevitable impact on our activity.
