Opus Orchestra – Song of the Earth @ Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts
Nov 29 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Music Director Peter Walls and Opus Orchestra present ‘Song of the Earth’ featuring international tour de force Simon O’Neill, and also presenting a very special commissioned work by Ross Harris.

This programme began with a suggestion from Simon O’Neill (who performed with Opus Orchestra in December 2016) to perform Iain Farrington’s brilliant reduced orchestration of Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde.

Ross Harris’s Vienna (Mahler) works with material from Mahler’s Symphony No. 7. It forms part of a suite commissioned by Peter and Kathryn Walls for the NZSO’s 2010 European tour. The other movements allude in a similar way to Wagner (who wrote his Ring Cycle in Lucerne) and Schumann. Ross is creating a special version of this Suite especially for Opus Orchestra.

Opus Orchestra: Unfinished @ Destiny Theatre, Rotorua

Mozart may have written some of the worlds finest music but his reputation for ill-temper is legendary, and the diminutive Schubert was arrested by the Austrian police, on suspicion of revolutionary activities. And Wagner, full of passion, had a life of exile and poverty. If it is true that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, then such men were surely the better for their troubles.

Be immersed in the music of these great composers –  the much loved ‘Haffner’ Symphony, and the mysterious ‘Unfinished’ Symphony’ will be performed by Opus Orchestra along with Ross Harris ‘Lucerne’,  originally commissioned by Peter and Kathryn Walls for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra 2010, and re-scored especially for this concert.
