Opus Orchestra – Principal Cello
Martin holds music degrees from the University of Auckland and the University of Maine.
He has performed as soloist with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra and the University of Maine Orchestra (Orono). In 2012 he gave a series of solo recitals to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the birth of Arnold Trowell, the subject of his PhD at the University of Waikato.
Martin collaborated with Martin Rummel to commemorate the 100th anniversary of David Popper (2013) and in the same year he performed “Katherine Mansfield, Cellist” in Tauranga and Wellington. In 2014 Martin founded Cantata Vespers at Saint Peter’s Cathedral in Hamilton, where he regularly performs with his wife and organist, Rachael Griffiths-Hughes.
He is a PhD Scholarship recipient (University of Waikato 2007), Arts Waikato Scholarship recipient (2007) and University of Waikato Norah Howell prize winner (2007).
Martin has performed with the Auckland Philharmonia, Auckland Chamber Orchestra and collaborated with songwriters Mark Williams and Matthew Bannister.
