“What is so special about Opus is the combination of gifted players and total dedication. We love making music together…”
Peter Walls, Music Director, Opus Orchestra
Opus Orchestra was founded in 1991 and continues to offer outstanding orchestral experiences for both musicians and audience. Its vision is to provide the highest possible standard of musical performance for audiences in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty regions and the wider Central North Island through a programme of more than a dozen concerts each year.
Opus Orchestra has presented several premiere performances of New Zealand works by rising and established composers. In September 2008 it performed a specially commissioned work by acclaimed Waikato University composer Michael Williams. Another international premiere is being planned for 2017.
Opus Orchestra plays a vital role in the creative life of the region through collaborations with many high profile musical entities as well as offering a soloist opportunity to winners and of the University of Waikato’s annual Concerto Competition .
By providing performance opportunities for experienced local musicians and younger players, including talented graduates from the Music Department of the University of Waikato we enhance and contribute to the cultural identity of the region. Opus has attracted nationally and internationally recognised musicians as soloists, including Michael Houston, Diedre Irons (July 2016) and Simon O’Neill (December 2016). Before accepting his invitation, Houston attended an Opus concert and was so impressed he not only agreed to perform with the orchestra but also to conduct the whole concert!
Now in it’s 25th year, Opus Orchestra promises to continue its long-standing tradition of artistic excellence and to provide the Waikato and Bay of Plenty public with great music and great artists.
Opus Orchestra also is available for arts festivals, choral productions and corporate/private functions. Performance contract options are available for the full orchestra or smaller ensemble groups. Repertoire for such engagements is chosen to fit the requirements of the occasion in consultation with our Music Director. If you are interested in having professional musicians at your event, please contact us. Please note that the orchestra plans its concert calendar at least one year in advance, so in order to consider a contract for the group, we need as much lead time as possible.
