Purpose of the Position
The Orchestra Planning Manager plays a key role in the organisation. This new role, starting in January 2020, will provide advice, oversight and practical support to the planning and delivery of our annual programme and is central to the logistical management of our activity. There is also a strong artistic component to this role. It will be the point of contact for players, Music Director, conductors and guest artists for all matters relating to our concerts and other activities of the orchestras.
The role is primarily based in Hamilton, with some work on evenings and weekends required.

You’ll have an ability to have many balls in the air at one time whilst still planning ahead, maintaining composure throughout. Your positive, “can do” attitude means you’ll be open to ‘mucking in’ to help get things done. You will be highly adaptable with buckets of diplomacy and tenacity.

Key Areas of Responsibility
- Contribute to programme development and planning including identification and selection of conductors, tutors, and other musical leaders
- Co-ordinate auditions, fix and contract professional players and form ensembles/orchestras for concerts and activities
- Develop the schedule for rehearsals, tutors, and sectionals in partnership with the conductors
- Logistics including itineraries, transport, accommodation and production requirements and soloist management
- Maintain player communications and management, develop and participate in community-building activities
- Manage recruitment and player development to develop the orchestral ecosystem
- Orchestra for hire quoting, player management and logistics
- Oversee rehearsal co-ordinators
- Work with the OCT team to ensure the successful presentation of concerts, outreach programmes, player development and other activities delivered by OCT
- In-depth understanding of sector standards and practices including the nuances of arts management
- Knowledge of orchestral repertoire and understanding/appreciation of the possibilities for orchestral music
- People management experience and knowledge of personnel/industrial relations
- Personal commitment to the vision of OCT, being part of a small, high performing team and to producing quality work
- Self-learner and able to work autonomously but within guidelines
- Understanding and experience in Orchestra management and how orchestras operate
- Understanding of performances and touring – logistics and technical know-how
- Willingness to work irregular hours and do what it takes to get the job done
DESIRABLE: First Aid Certificate
DESIRABLE: Previous experience gained in a similar role with an NZ based orchestra
PREFERRED Tertiary qualifications in music or management
REQUIRED: Full Drivers license
REQUIRED: Music expertise in at least one orchestral instrument
