Soloist: Noelle Dannenbring – Rhapsody in Blue
Conductor – Justus Rozemond
A moody blue programme of famous music is the perfect match for a lazy Sunday afternoon. And while you’re there, experience surround-sound – in real life! A unique twist on the traditional as players move from the stage to perform from vantage points throughout the theatre.
Guest conductor, Justus Rozemond, has been delighting sell-out audiences in his home town of Tauranga. He is conducting a vibrant selection of late-era orchestral music including works that people fall in love with over and over again.
Works like Gerswhin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue (1924). This was written a little over a month after the composer learned he was to write a jazz concerto from a newspaper article lying around a billiard parlor. The piece is an irresistible blend of classical and jazz idioms, and will feature talented young pianist and 2016 winner of the University of Waikato Concerto Competition, Noelle Dannenbring.
Also on the programme is Rozemond’s own arrangement of Gerswhin’s Three Preludes, made especially for the concert, and Bernstein’s Selections from West Side Story.
Copland An Outdoor Overture
Borodin In the Steppes of Central Asia

Holst Somerset Rhapsody
