OCTavo is a key part of Orchestras Central, as we work towards our vision of a vibrant orchestral scene that brings joy to communities.
OCTavo’s role is to offer performances and collaborations that respond to particular community demands. What that means in real terms is that the ensemble, (which comprises professional players from Hamilton all of whom also play with other orchestras in the OCT family) has the opportunity to play together, and to work collaboratively not only the direction of the group, but to explore new ways of making music.
The group first performed at Sensing Music in 2017, presenting two concerts: ‘Music in the Round’ was an evening of intimate music that included the NZ Premier of Symphonic Chocolates, a work composed in Hamilton, Ontario. ‘Sonoscopia’ comprised the world premiere of a new composition written especially for the group by Dr Jeremy Mayall, which offered live art being produced as the musicians played. Sonoscopia was then presented for a second time at the 2018 Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival.
In March 2018 OCTavo delivered Orchestrating Outcomes in partnership with CELFoundation, and this will be repeated in June for the Waikato Management School. The group will also travel to Whitianga in September as guests of Creative Mercury Bay.
OCTavo is also available for hire.
