About OCT

Orchestras Central delivers fantastic orchestral music experiences in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty.

Waikato Orchestral Society (est.1904), Opus Orchestra Trust (est. 1991) and United Youth Orchestra Trust (est.2003), joined together in 2015  to form one Trust to promote and develop both musicians and our audiences, as well as grow our community engagement.

There’s certainly ‘more than meets the ear’ to this organisation – as well as arts administration, we deliver the best performances, grow player participation and encourage community engagement through our concerts, programmes, and education initiatives. We are a registered Charitable Trust with a Board of nine highly experienced governing Trustees. Part of the vision for Orchestras Central is to value those volunteers when and if they are able to contribute, but to ensure they do not feel guilty when they can not. The office has a remunerated team of four, along with our three music Directors (also currently each Orchestras’ conductor),who support over 300 musicians, both voluntary (unauditioned) and contracted professionals, and deliver close to thirty events per annum across 9 venues in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty region.

Our orchestras comprise of the Waikato/Bay of Plenty’s only professional orchestra, Opus Orchestra, the Trust Waikato Symphony (our community orchestra), Rusty Players (just like it sounds!)  and the United Youth Orchestra  which supports emerging musicians age 13-25.  Many of these musicians also provide administration support in a volunteer capacity.

We have strategic relationships with Trust Waikato, Creative New Zealand, Hamilton City Council, and WEL Energy Trust as our founding supporters.  We are also thrilled to have a family of sponsors that includes the University of Waikato,  Prolife Foods, Tompkins Wake, TECT, RECT and other region wide organisations and generous individuals committed to supporting us.

Orchestras Central Trust would not exist were it not for the incredible support of those support us financially, and through generous provisions of services and skills.

In addition, we are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support and enthusiasm of the group of passionate volunteers who work behind the scene.

More than ten thousand people enjoyed listening to our Orchestras last year!  Find out more about our upcoming events here.
